Purple Valley 2005

This weekend, I heard a bunch of really sweet guys who like to hang out (otherwise known as Dartmouth Ultiimate) rolled into Williams College for their annual Purple Valley tournament. Word on the street is good times were had:

Game 1: The Dartmouth Love vs. WUFO (Williams Ultimate Frisbee Organization for the uneducated)
After trading points with WUFO for most of the game, Dartmouth came out on top in universe point. The offense didn't really gel, especially early on, not getting great flow in man, but the defense generated enough turns to keep Dartmouth in control of the game. A couple timeouts helped the offense regain focus mid-point, and Dartmouth proved the better team in the end. Kudos to Sam "Faithful Badger" Routhier, Sam "Voidninja" Cobbles, and the rest of the handler core for keeping composed and working the disc despite clogging and inclement weather.
11-10, Dartmouth (1-0)

Game 2: The Big Green vs. The Red Line
The Harvard game gave us a good kick in the ass, and has definitely shown how much work Dartmouth still needs to do before it even comes close to playing to potential. Harvard ran a very aggressive man D against us, and also gave us a different with a mark shifting from forcing line to no dump as the count gets higher, making for lots of contested plays and, combined with the weather and a still-sputtering offense, a lot of turnovers on Dartmouth's part. Harvard ran dump-swing very well to get a lot of break-side flow, and also got a lot of easy break points from short turnovers and as a result and were up 11-7 as hard cap went on. After cap went on, however, Dartmouth found new energy and drive, and an increase in effort combined with a very strong 2-man-cup zone helped Dartmouth bring it to 11-10 before Harvard got their final point.
12-10, Harvard (1-1)

Game 3: Us vs. Them (Middlebury)
After recooperation, hot chocolate, and the creation of sweet codenames, Us came back to play Middlebury. The game began with a strange three point run by Midd, followed by the Dartmouth team who, much akin to a pack of meer cats suddenly standing to attention, simultaneously turned their games on to take the game by force. Tight defense and a chilly-smooth offense put Us on a diety-impressing 11-point run to terminate the first day with a 2-1 record, good for second in the pool and a matchup with Brown on Sunday.
12-3, Us (2-1)

Interlude: PV party!
What tournament would be complete without a night time of partying to wear off the strain from the day? i dunno, maybe there are some, but not PV. Theme: Alice in wonderland. Live music, great kids, smooth times. In the house, we put the 'oooo' in 'smooooth'; on the dance floor, we put 'art' in 'party'; (for the cheer, we put the 'forgo' in 'forgot to do one'). Our warmhearted and gentlemanly ways won the hearts of WUFO, and won the party of PV. Kudos the females for their cheer and sponsoring a land-porpoise. And congratulations (from TCB; a resounding two thumbs down from TCE) to our hat game participants for putting the 'ok' in 'hook up.' Also worth noting is that Dartmouth won the right to go to Nationals from Harvard in a boat race. bad choice hahvahd, bad choice.
Game 4: All That is Good and Clean in the World vs. Poop
Despite being a prety crappy team, Brown showed they didn't win their national title on a fluke, playing a relentless zone in the windy weather that saw Dartmouth creating a lot of turns after working the disc up the field a good ways on several points and giving up lots of easy break points on short turns as well. The zone O struggled early on as the poppers strugged to find their groove, forcing the handlers to work overtime. Defensively Dartmouth found itself able to generate turns but having difficulty converting, but as the game progressed the Defense got better and better, keeping Brown from generating flow in man the later points as well as doing a good job of stifling Brown with the 1-3-3 zone. As with Harvard, Dartmouth was down by a fair bit when hard cap went on, but found new life once it came down to the wire, fighting back from 11-4 to go on a three-point run, thanks to some amped-up defense and good execution on opening up the deep game, as Dartmouth ended on a strong note. Props to Faithful Badger and Humble Trout for some sweet puts, as well as to Lunar Eclipse with a ridiculous run and layout for a score. And a special bit of Dartmouth Love for Princess Layout for coming out to cheer us on/wearing warm clothing to huddle next to while subbed out.
12-7, Brown (2-2)

Game 5: Nature vs. Nurture
With lots of work to get back to and the womenfolk finished with all their games, Dartmouth collaborated with Amherst to resolve the 3rd-place game in quick fashion with an age-old game, known and respected far and wide by many of the world's most eminent leaders: Bear Ninja Cowboy. Despite getting some early wins via the always-effective use of nature's most feared beast, Dartmouth soon gave into the temptation of the Wild West, as the Cowboy's feeble guns proved ineffective versus the speed and elegance of the Ninja. After finally realizing that Amherst was using exclusion play on the Bear and adjusting strategy appropriately, Amherst sprung their final trap, unleashing all of nature's fury to obliterate the Ninja. I'm not really sure what the final tally was, I think it wound up being something like 5-2?
?-?, Amherst (2-3), good for 4th overall

Overall, Dartmouth had a very productive weekend. We got to see what our competition is going to look like this year, and also got a good sense for what we need to work on. The team still has tremendous untapped potential, and it figures to be a very exciting year for Dartmouth Ultimate as it makes its next run at nationals.
